DVCC Varsity Runners on the way to a second-place finish at the Arizona D1/S2 Sectional Meet at Freestone Park in Gilbert
An injured hamstring may have cost him the championship, but junior Carter Macey still finished third and led the Desert Vista Cross Country team to a runner-up finish in the AIA Division I Section II meet Friday, Oct. 28, at Gilbert's Freestone Park.
Macey finished in 16 minutes, 11 seconds, just nine seconds out of first. Fellow junior Ryan Dykstra also medaled, ending in sixth place. Senior Nick Kooinga placed 15th and two more juniors, Ryan Smith and Zack Smith, finished 17th and 24th, respectively, to complete the scoring for DVCC. The top five totaled 65 points and averaged 16:37, just behind Gilbert Highland (59 points, 16:32). They'll be trying to make up the difference in the state meet Saturday, Nov. 5, at Cave Creek Golf Course.
“It's good to see the boys regaining some confidence as we approach the most important meet of the season!”, said Coach Chris Hanson.
