Coaching Staff

Head Coach: Chris Hanson

Coach Hanson

Coach Hanson has been Head Coach for Desert Vista Boys Cross Country since its inception in 1996. He has been awarded Coach of the Year eight times. He has coached three Individual Cross Country State Champions. His Cross Country teams have won eight State Championships and four State Runner-Ups, along with multiple Sectional/Regional championships, all at the highest level of Arizona High School classifications. Coach is originally from Iowa, where at the University of Northern Iowa he met his bride Stefanie. They have been married since 1995. He has three children: former DVCC Boys Runner Solomon Hanson (Class of 2017) who is now attending the United States Air Force Academy, a daughter Sevanna, and a second son Seth.


Assistant Coach: Rich Janas

Coach Janas

Coach Janas has been a volunteer assistant for Desert Vista Boys Cross Country since 2013. He is the father of former DVCC Boys Runner Jacob Janas (Class of 2015).


Assistant Coach: Jeff Messer

Coach Messer

Coach Messer joins the Thunder coaching staff for the 2017 season as a volunteer assistant coach. He holds a Ph.D. in Exercise Physiology from ASU and and serves as the Excercise Science Department Chair at Mesa Community College. Dr. Messer has most recently been Head Coach of the DVCC Girls (2016-2013) where his teams won three State Championships (2016, 2014, 2013).  Prior to that, he was Head Coach of Xavier College Prep Girls Cross Country (2012-2006) where his teams won six consecutive State Championships (2012-2007). Dr. Messer was recognized by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association as the 2016 National Girls High School Cross Country Coach of the Year.


Assistant Coach: Mindy Thatcher

Coach Thatcher

This is Coach Thatcher's second year as an assistant volunteer coach with the DVCC team and her first year with the boys.  Prior to joining the staff, she ran in college for Eastern Washington University and was also a coach in Washington and Idaho while teaching math.  In addition, she worked as an assistant coach with the Brigham Young University women's cross country and track team while pursuing a master's degree.  Her daughter Olivia Thatcher (Class of 2021) is a current DVCC runner and her son, Nick (Class of 2018) was also a member of the DVCC team.
